What is Dog Obedience?

Dog Obedience is NOT merely a performance or trick. It is an attitude of respect which results in a dog listening and learning from their Owner. For example have you ever watched Crufts Obedience, and dogs in the Ring 'performing' precise exercises? Watch closely afterwards, they pull, tug, bark, jump, grab etc. Sadly, they have just been 'performing' learned exercises FOR their own benefit, i.e. treat or toy. Personally, I feel this is demeaning to a dog's intelligence, that it is assumed a dog can only learn through food or toys. A dog's reward is having a 'Leader' that it can rely on and trust. This is natural to any dog. Furthermore, the Owner also learns more about dogs, because you are dealing with his brain rather than his stomach!

For instance the dog laying down in a place that you choose. If the dog gets up after a few moments or just a couple of minutes, or perhaps when distracted, then it is merely 'performing an exercise'. Neither should it only remain laying down providing you are continually having to remain focussed and reminding the dog! What is the point or help of that???

There are many situations where you would want or need your dog to remain comfortably laying down for varying periods, i.e. while you are on the phone, while watching TV or reading a newspaper, while having a picnic outdoors, while visiting a friend in their home and your dog lays by your chair and gets up when you are ready to leave, (you AND your dog would certainly be invited again)! When you have family or friends to your home. The list is endless ....... This is an obedient dog who accepts happily what is required of him/her.

A trained dog with a trusting relationship to his/her Owner will be attentive and relaxed, and of course obedient where-ever that may be, irrespective of indoors or outdoors, relaxing or playing, resting or running. He/she remains conscious of the 'Leader' (who is the important communicator to their relationship).

I have evening AND daytime Clubs. Plus Puppy training and private visits too.

Best foot and paw forward,
Chris
